Here is a mantra for the day... maybe i should phrase it as a question... Why is it that we never have enough? Work our asses off on a daily basis to achieve / get something that we think we deserve. the 9 to 5 drains us so bad that we are left with only a few precious hours before we pass out. we usually fill those hours with sitting on the couch b/c that is all we have energy for. in the end, is it all for the promotion, the raise, the success? Myself, I would rather be roaming a forest, wandering through and old city or puttering on some artwork. I don't mean it to sound like i am a slacker, but rather have new priorities that are much clearer these days. i know what makes me happy.

In general, i cannot decide if i am just awestruck or jealous that i do not have a 3d printer myself. there are so many mediums i would like to try, artwork i wish i could do, but (because of reasons like materials, machinery or time) seem so intangible to me.

...to a problem i have been perplexed with for some time. their website doesn't say much about how it all works, but that fact that this even works at all is extremely exciting. it is time to move away from that old technology of forcing dusty air around our homes.

Bendable concrete...wow. why didn't i think of this? really though, the amount of problems "cured" (i crack my shit up!) will be amazing.

concrete is one of the most useful building materials for modern day architecture, but it's Achilles heal is it's inability to withstand shear forces or tension. it crumbles when pulled or bent....until now. thank goodness for univ. of michiganders and their new technology devised to allow concrete to HEAL its cracks after it is bent. this shit is truly magical -

By contrast, the new concrete composite can bend into a U-shape without breaking. When strained, the material forms hairline cracks, which auto-seal after a few days of light rain.

Dry material exposed by the cracks reacts with rainwater and carbon dioxide in the air to form "scars" of calcium carbonate, a strong compound found naturally in seashells, said study co-author Victor Li of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

i mean...really? i love science. now buildings can withstand earthquakes better, bridges can move easier without expansion joints....ahhh yes.

it became clear to me that atlanta is possibly getting the best of me....or at least portions of it...

i remember when i was younger and my father and i were talking about colleges and cities to live in, atlanta came up in the conversation. i had only been there once before and really had no opinion at the moment. "has never sat well with me. it just has no character," he told me very asurredly. i took his opinion as fact, like i did most things he said, which is embarrassing for a bull-headed /opinionated invidiual like myself to admit (insert applause or kandace's i-told-you-so look here.) he was wrong. granted he has not, nor probably will, ever spend as much time as i have here, which is important, at least for me...so it has taken a while, i have pieced some things together, talked to some peeps and finally came up with my own opinion.

the character is there, embedded in the buildings that have already fallen, the ones barely standing, the anger in the traffic, the familiarity shared in the small whole-in-the-wall places scattered about the different neighborhoods, the way the fog can hug the structures that pierce the atmosphere like only a mother could, the people (i know, people are everywhere, but i am very fond of a few folks here.) there are a lot of different and important factors that need to be calculated into the equation of being fond of someplace, but they are here too for me. i can't say that i don't still want to see every inch of every rock sprawled across the landscape, but it feels good to not be so anxious in the dirt that my feet currently dig their feet into.

is it that transparent that i am in a good mood? what can i say, i got some good sleep last night.

alright, before i get back to the beauty of things, let me digress for a moment on the ugly...
this piece of shit is just that, a PIECE OF SHIT. don't get me wrong, i have continued to endure it's uselessness because i would like to do my part it the landfill crisis. it also seemed like an ingenius idea in comparison to the brita pitcher. i put forth large efforts to install the bitch - had to purchase a "different" wrench to pry apart my kitchen faucet, etc. - as you can see, i was determined and for good reason, this seemed like a solution to multiple problems...

well let this be my warning to you, it has NOT been a solution quite yet. i admit, maybe i got a defective one, which is entirely possible. maybe i deserve the defective one, because i am obviously too lazy to return the thing and hope for better results the second go around. my main problem, you ask? in a nutshell, it is slower than molasses. i am serious, it is a slow drizzle that sounds like someone struggling to piss in every glass i fill up, which by the way takes about 5 minutes. i can't imagine trying to fill an entire pot of water! i know, i have brought this upon myself, but there you have it...consumer report for the day :)

Cutler Anderson Architects designed a splendiferous home outside of Seattle that has me in awe. Aside from the flawless joinery and woodwork throughout, the well thought out plan and open living spaces looking out to the greenspace, what I adore most is that it reminds me of Carlos Scarpa. The idea of putting emphasis onto a material or element by visually separating it from another is something I am always fond of. The separation begins to show in more ways than one the construction and bones of what makes up the whole. Carlos Scarpa was able to achieve that almost effortlessly...I put some of his stuff at the bottom.

i usually do not make new years resolutions, but i do try to wipe the symbolic slate clean every time i have to re-learn to write a new year instead of the last. with the slate now clean, i am going to try to focus. let everything around me settle and take one task at a time. simplicity is highly underrated...

I have never been to Siberia. Never desired to travel to Siberia. From what I have heard, it is a bit on the chilly side, climate-wise - and that is a sure fire way to keep me far away. These photos, though, were not what I expected. The patina that has formed on all the elements of the house is indescribably magic. This is what will always dwarf modernism, in my opinion. The history that resides is the creases of the wood is invaluable...

I think Corbusier might have gotten it wrong (maybe not at the time, but now that we are able to look back and critique it) by accentuating the driveway - e.g. Villa Stein.

In his defense, the car was more prominent and rare then vs it now being something we would all love to discard. Really this is all just my opinion, i think i would just rather be on foot to work, but san francisco is a bit too expensive at the moment.

Ol' pal of mine, Rob, emailed me his wedding toast / speech, which was about jellyfish. Maybe he will share it with the world on his blog someday. The point here is that I loved the toast, the metaphor of two people getting married like two jellyfish bobbing along the currents of the ocean aimlessly and happily. Well, that wasn't the POINT, the real point is that I never heard him say the toast. It IS possible that the ONE time i went to the restroom throughout the entire wedding reception he might have quickly slipped it past me and blurted it out...when i got back to the party he was mid-sentence in what seemed like a different toast all together...which in that case, i think he needs to communicate this toast to his new bride at some point - maybe that was my point? Still i don't think i have reached a point... okay, now i have it - today feels like a jellyfish.

These photos were taken of the underground railroad that ran below the World Trade Center that demo crews finally had to take apart in order to continue the newly planned work (that will never end) at the site. It is hard for me to believe that the NY Historic Commission had nothing to say about this - rather sad, how we destroy the fabric of our history so quickly. What could they build that could be more fascinating than this?

Alright, so Thom Davis did it....He made my Tuesday and it is 8:01am. This house just made me giddy for the first time in a while about the profession i question often - my own - architecture. Maybe it is because i just watched that video below and i am feeling the need to fulfill some void of curiousity, but i can't help the obvious. I saw this and i got excited because there is something out there that i have never seen before and at the same time - adore. Should that not be what all artists strive for? Inspiration. What is innovative art without it? Thank you, Thom, for keeping this work engine of mine going a bit longer. For critique's sake though, could you just erase the lone window on the second floor for me? maybe put some birch wood siding to match the fascia board over it all the way down to the ground.

Herzog & de Meuron's latest skyscraper on Leanord in NYC. Not sure what I think yet. Some of the images are beautiful, but I think the building starting to deconstruct itself 3/4 of the way up doesn't sit right with me. There is something too simple about the transition that I can't put my finger on. None the less, it is still beautiful, I am still in awe of any architect that can push the limits. Very Moshe Safdie - Habitat 67, no?

I think my favorite part of the entire bldg, and this isn't saying much for the architecture unintentionally, is the Anish Kapoor sculpture on the ground floor. Now THAT is a transition, haha! I love it!

My childhood fantasies come to fruition...

Stumbled upon this blog that had some tree houses that just make you want to pack a little bag and up and leave wherever you are, hike into the Fijian jungle and climb a tree. I remember as soon as the "tent building" phase of my childhood came to a close, I moved onto bigger and better ideas - treehouses. My "eco-friendly" father refused to let me hammer any nails into the trees, ugh. If I only was an apprentice to a Japanese joinery master, but this was not the case. My end product = a single 3 foot long 2x4 wedged in between the fork of the tree. I tied a rope to the tightly-wedged-single-piece-of-wood & would scale up to my "tree house." All I could do was sit in one position or I would fall off. Dreams can still come true thought, ya know. I mean, shit, I am an architect...right? I think I would need to build this dream myself, though, for principle's sake.
