Illinois' Pyramid

When I was much younger my grandmother and mother decided to take my sister and I to this weird tourist spot near Six Flags in Chicago. Some guy had decided to build a replica pyramid (can't remember how close it was in scale) and have this attraction with tombs, camels, gift shop galore. I am sure I enjoyed it at the time - could not have been more than 10 years old or something. My grandmother (Ita - short for abuelita - don't ask me how she formed that nickname) even enjoyed the place, most likely because her two granddaughters were happy. Ita had been to Egypt years before - in reality, now that I look back, I am sure she was not impressed with this guys endeavor to recreate Egypt in Illinois. I remember the camel being amazing, the pyramid being sooooo strange, because the guy had like modern day furniture inside, oh and the gift shop of course. Everyone spent a lot of money in there I am sure.

Point of story you might ask? I found this link today. Besides this venue and it's hilarious description, which I thought my sister would get a kick out of, there are also some of my favorite pieces of architecture (#s 1,2,4,7 &10.) Funny how some of my favorites have just been tagged "wacky," as well as being grouped with Illinois' finest pyramid.

Zenia, Marika - please comment below & tell me anything more you can remember about this place. I am sure both of you have a much clearer vision of what it was actually like.

MMS...

stands for Make Me SICK!

I hate to get so far off of any subject, but I need to vent here. I purchased one of those stick room sent things yesterday - says on the box "takes approximately 36 hours to begin making sent." Failed to mention though, that so-called "sent" would smell like someone vomitted Cut Grass (come on - I thought it would remind me of my childhood?) into my loft in an overwhelming manner. I cannot escape the smell! The same goes for those dumb-ass car scents that attack you as you open the bag like a damn car jacker. New Car Scent my aunt fannie! Smells more like the scent of my car's interior upholstery being permananly damaged. You can tell this is a sensitive subject for me, but for good reason....There is nothing better than a good subtle sent to give someone a positive memory or reference to someplace (aka my car or my loft!) Instead I am finding myself figuring out ways to de-scent my place like I just cooked fried chicken or something. Alright. Rant over. I need to get to work.

Chelushkin Kirill

I need to preface this artist, with the fact that as much as I like the works I am showing, I am a bit put off by some of his other stuff. It can get pretty phallic and....well, whatever. None the less I really like this work. Slightly reminds me of Giger's style.

My friend Kandace would agree with me here when I say there is nothing more elegant in the field of architecture than the hand sketch. There are some architects that can make the boldest of statements with a single line or others that can boggle your mind with their attention to detail. I wish I knew how long it took to draw these....even more, I wish I could draw like that from my mind. I would need a photo, a reference, but this is just this artist's mind spewing out ideas onto paper.

So this artist doesn't have a website that I could find, a few people list him in blogs, etc., but not much else. He might even be dead for all I know, but if you know more please let me in on the secret.

London Pool Houses

There is so much beauty in the abandoned. Gigi Cifali is amazing behind the lense, but these were my favorite. From her series Absence of Water...

It all began with light...

Everyone's love for architecture has an inception date. I studied architecture for four years before I really realized how much I loved it. For me, it was seeing the Dan Flavin exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. That exhibit shaped my Thesis and over time also shaped my love for architecture...

My thesis attempted to convey, through an installation, how light can transform space.
